Vietnam prepares a UNESCO path for the Marble Mountains
StoneNews reports that Da Nang is preparing documentation for a UNESCO nomination for Ngu Hanh Son. The initiative concerns the Marble Mountains’ geological and cultural significance and local stone-carving traditions. It is a nomination in preparation, not World Heritage status already granted.
Editorial context
The case offers a cultural reading of stone alongside its commercial uses. A geological landscape, artisan work and the sale of material are different subjects. They can be discussed together without implying that the landscape is a source of commercially available extraction.
Readers should also distinguish a place’s historical identity from the origin of a present-day supply. A geographical name alone does not document where a particular slab comes from. This editorial observation does not anticipate the outcome of the UNESCO process.
