Previously unknown Roman marble quarry identified in Lugo
An international study has identified a marble quarry used in Roman times at As Eiras, in the Gondrame–O Páramo area of Galicia. Researchers linked the material to funerary inscriptions and other monumental elements.
Focus Piedra reports that petrographic and cathodoluminescence analysis allowed the marble’s mineral signature to be compared with archaeological objects. Five extraction faces, abandoned blocks and working traces were documented.
Editorial context
The finding expands the map of local marbles in Roman Gallaecia and concerns historical heritage, not new commercial supply. Its value is scientific: it shows how material analysis and quarry evidence can reconstruct stone provenance and circulation.
